CrowFly is an online marketplace connecting sellers and buyers of structured settlement payments. To be successful in this day and age, you need to have more than just an in-demand service or product; you also have to have a strong company foundation and culture. Below, Nita Bhatia, COO of CrowFly, shares some of the core values that help strengthen the company internally.
Are you passionate about your company? Do you love what you do and who you work with?
Passion is the fuel that drives ourselves, our performance, and our company forward. Every day, the CrowFly team is inspired because we believe in what we are doing and where we are going.
Are you empowering your direct reports to drive change?
Part of being in a growing company is that change is constant. We must all learn to embrace change enthusiastically and, perhaps even more importantly, encourage and drive it. Change should be driven from the bottom up – from the people who are on the front lines, closer to the customers and/or issues. If we want to stay ahead of our competition, we must continually adapt and keep them guessing. A website, design, and even process can be replicated, but your people, your culture, and your service cannot.
How much fun do you have in your job and what can you do to make it more fun? How do you encourage more teamwork?
Company culture is critical to CrowFly’s success. We are more than just a team; we are a family. We encourage diversity in ideas, opinions, and points of view. All organizations should encourage people to express their personality in their work. A benefit of this is that it encourages people to think outside of the box and be more innovative.
Are you taking enough risks? Are you afraid of making mistakes? Do you push yourself outside of your comfort zone?
When people dread going into work, it’s usually because they know they are leaving a piece of themselves at home. Why not see what happens when you challenge your employees to bring all their talents to their job and reward them for pushing the envelope, or for being adventurous, creative, and open-minded? Let your employees take risks and try new things. Some will work and some will not, and that’s OK. The key is to learn from your mistakes and use them to help develop and improve your gut and decision-making skills.
How can you make your relationships more open and honest? How can you do a better job of communicating with everyone?
Communication tends to be one of the weakest spots in any organization. Open, honest communication is the best foundation for any relationship. It is important to be a good listener as well as a good communicator. At the end of the day, it’s not what you say or what you do, but how you make people feel that matters the most. In order for someone to feel good about a relationship, they must know that the other person truly cares about them. This is true for any type of relationship: business partners, managers, direct reports, customers, vendors, co-workers, etc. This is a key differentiator for CrowFly; we care!
